The Myth of the Dark Ages

Another myth to refute: that the Church wanted to maintain power after the fall of the Roman Empire, so they tried to squash education and learning... thus giving us the "Dark Ages." Is that true? Did that really happen? Is the Church guilty of keeping people ignorant for the sake of power?
